Lambeth London Living estates go wild

“The Wildflower meadows are a joint project between our residents, staff and contractors; and will really brighten up our estates.”

- Terry Gallagher, Lambeth London Living Deputy Chief Executive

From the summer, eight Lambeth London Living estates will be getting wilder and brighter when the wildflower meadows, planted recently by residents, staff and contractors, begin to bloom.

Inspired by the Olympic wild flower meadows, the project has been developed as part of Lambeth London Living’s Getting Involved Resident Engagement Strategy, which aims to give residents a say in how their estates are managed and services delivered.

Fun events were held over the Easter holidays. Children from the estates painted pot plants to take home, made seeds bombs and seeded the meadows, with the help of their parents Lambeth London Living staff and contractors.

The contractors, Pinnacle, Keepmoat, Mears and Morrisons all helped get the areas ready for planting. They also supplied the soil and craft activities - making for a fun and interactive afternoon, which brought residents together. Wildflower were used as they are easy to plant and the meadows easy to maintain. The mix of different flowers means the meadows will bloom over a longWildflower planting Notre-Dame event April 2013 period of time.

Notre Dame resident Katrice Campbell said “The wildflower meadows will make  our community beautiful. It’s really encouraging for communities to join in activities.”

Terry Gallagher, Lambeth London Living Deputy Chief Executive said “Now the weather is milder the flowers should start to bloom by the end of May. Once the meadows are established the management will be handed over to the tenants associations, giving everyone the chance to get involved.

If the meadows are a success we will look to work with more residents associations to sow wildflower meadows on their estates.”
